Our work involves many different approaches, depending on local circumstances and needs. We provide a wide range of programs, including: 1. Training new mothers with prenatal care; 2. Supplying life-saving immunizations for young children; 3. Building schools in developing countries; 4. Improving literacy and nutrition for children living in rural poverty in the U.S.

Save the Children is the world's largest independent organisation for children, making a difference to children's lives in over 120 countries. From emergency relief to long-term development, Save the Children helps children to achieve a happy, healthy and secure childhood. Save the Children listens to children, involves children and ensures their views are taken into account. Save the Children secures and protects children's rights - to food, shelter, health care, education and freedom from violence, abuse and exploitation. As long as there are children in need, Save the Children will find innovative ways to help them survive and thrive. Description of activities
Around the world, Save the Children enables children, parents and teachers to be involved in school organisation and the delivery of education. In India we trained 1.000 Village Education Committees so they can play an active part in shaping local education provision. Training of Kenyan health workers on adolescent reproductive health services
SC aims to ensure that education is relevant and of high quality, from early childhood development centres through to accelerated learning programmes for older children who have missed out on school. Our basic education programme in Amhara, Ethiopia provides informal education opportunities for over 270.000 children in rural areas.
Sever drought in East Africa in early 2006 left 1.75 million children in Kenya in need of food, healthcare and water. Save the Children treated malnourished children and strengthened healthcare systems by equipping health facilities and training Kenyan Ministry of Health Staff. We also supported long-term recovery by using a unique cash transfer system to help families restock their cattle herds.
Save the Children achieves change for young people at national and local levels. Working with the Indian Department of Labour, we have developed a school curriculum covering life skills such as conflict resolution, negotiation and communication skills. This curriculum is now being introduced nationally. We have also lobbied local authorities to recruit teachers which are fluent in local languages, which has encouraged more children from ethnic minorities to enrol and stay in school.
Our child protection works involves research and lobbying activities as well as directly supporting children. We published a report on widespread abuse of children in Liberia by humanitarian workers and others in position of powers - girls as young as 8 were being forced into sex in exchange for basic necessities. Save the Children made the keynote address at a UN meeting on the sexual exploitation and abuse of children, leading the call to end this kind of exploitation. With partners SC launched Keeping Children Safe materials to enable humanitarian organisations to safeguard child welfare.
Save the Children works with governments and education authorities to strengthen school systems and make them more child friendly. SC led a campaign that resulted in corporal punishment being outlawed in Mongolian schools benefiting over 650.000 children. The Mongolian Government is also introducing a new code of conduct for teachers to end illegal school fees, which have kept thousands of children out of school.

Advocacy Office

The main goal of the Geneva advocacy office is to create positive change for children by advocating key child rights and child protection issues at the global level to the United Nations bodies and member states based in Geneva as well as to represent Save the Children in the various fora and meetings on relevant issues that occur in Geneva.
