The UN Mission in Iraq: Current Challenges

Events

Since its establishment in August 2003, the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) has taken a significant part in Iraq’s political evolution and formation of new governing structures. UNAMI has provided technical assistance for the elections in 2009 and 2010 and played a crucial role in promoting national dialogue between Iraq’s ethnic groups as well as the peaceful resolution of disputed internal borders. With the consolidation of the political process and the withdrawal of the international forces currently under way, UNAMI is at a crossroads, as the Mission will increasingly focus on the coordination of development activities. SRSG Ad Melkert examined the present role of the UN Mission in Iraq and reflected on the country’s remaining peacebuilding challenges.
