Switzerland-Algeria: The discreet role of the two states in resolving the American hostage crisis in Iran (1979 - 1981)

Between 1979 and 1981, the American hostage crisis in Iran made international history: 52 people held for 444 days, at the heart of major diplomatic tension. This event looks back at the discreet but decisive role played by two diplomatic players: Switzerland and Algeria.

Through a film-debate, this meeting proposes to go back behind the scenes of the mediation and the diplomatic practices that contributed to the resolution of the crisis, highlighting approaches based on neutrality, trust and discreet negotiation.

Programme

1. Screening of the documentaryAmbassade
The role of Swiss diplomacy in Tehran - presence, neutrality, humanity
The screening will be followed by an exchange with the director Daniel Wyss.

2. Presentation: Algeria's role in mediation
A look back at the path that led to the Algiers Agreements, a decisive step towards the release of the hostages.

3. Round table - "The art of diplomacy: yesterday and today"
An exchange around diplomatic practices, their evolution and their relevance in the current international context.
